SRAM Corp. v. AD-II Engineering, Inc.October 6, 2006

The Federal Circuit vacated the district court’s denial of partial summary judgment of validity, its grant of partial summary judgment of no validity, its judgment of liability in favor of SRAM, and its grant of an injunction against AD-II.The patent at issue was directed to a method of shifting between bicycle gears. SRAM’s patent discloses shift actuators having a mechanism that assures ‘precise’ downshifting. No overshifting movement of the shift actuator is required because the cumulative lost motion inherent in the system is taken up by an internal mechanism, which provides for a built-in overshift. AD-II manufactures and sells bicycle gear shifters. SRAM initiated a number of lawsuits against various customers of AD-II
