Law firm prosecutes important vaccine patentApril 26, 2001 MIT’s Technology Review, May Edition cites United States Patent 6,136,320 as one of the top five patents issued in 2000 that has the potential to transform existing businesses or create entire new industries. The patent, prosecuted by Heidi Nebel of the firm deals with transgenic plants that function as edible vaccines. The plant is engineered to produce the vaccine with in it and a child or animal may become vaccinated, for example against Hepatitis B virus simply by consuming the edible portion of the plant (e.g. corn). The patent covers the use of any viral vaccine produced in any plant.
