Heidi S. Nebel Elected to the AUTM Board of Directors – AUTM Chair and Newly Elected Board Members Take OfficeMarch 25, 2020

Des Moines, Iowa, March 25, 2020 — The Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), a global non-profit whose members support the commercialization of academic research through intellectual property protection, start-up formation and industry-academia collaborations, has elected Heidi S. Nebel, Managing Member of MVS, to its Board of Directors.

Heidi is an Intellectual Property attorney with over 25 years of experience obtaining patents and designing IP strategy in the areas of biotechnology, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Heidi is the Chair of the Biotechnology & Chemical practice group. She serves as an advocate for her clients and believes that the best results come from working in close association with the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office examiners.

Heidi participated in the seminal United States Supreme Court case, Pioneer v. J. E. M. Ag Supply, 534 U. S. 124 (2001), which confirmed the availability of utility patent protection for plants.

Agricultural patents in the animal area also form a large part of Heidi’s practice including animal vaccines, gene editing, and sex selection. She manages several of the firm’s largest clients and guides client teams to focus on overall business strategies around a solid intellectual property foundation. Heidi also enjoys being an advocate of biotechnology, speaking around the country on important issues in the field.

Heidi is actively involved in AUTM where she has served on the Board of the Midwest Region for four years and has presented at meetings over the past 15 years.

AUTM also welcomed its new Chair, Marc Sedam, the Vice Provost for Innovation and New Ventures at the University of New Hampshire; and Managing Director of UNHInnovation. In addition, Laura Savatski, Technology Transfer Officer for the non-profit organization Versiti | Blood Research Institute. has been selected as AUTM’s Chair-Elect and will succeed Sedam when he steps down as Chair in March 2021.

Joining Heidi, Marc and Laura on the Board are the other newly installed directors, that are elected to three-year term:

  • Hannah Dvorak Carbone, PhD, Director for Innovation, Patents & Licensing, California Institute of Technology
  • Andrew J. Maas, JD, LLM, MSE, PE, RTTP, Associate Vice President for Research and Director of the Office of Innovation and Technology Commercialization, Louisiana State University
  • Gisele Roberts, MBA, Manager, Innovation and Commercialization, Laurentian University
  • Markus J. Wando, MBA, MSc, Mag., Head of Technology Transfer, Institute of Science and Technology Austria
